| | Well, today has been irritating all around (three posts in one day!). I just got into a fight with Frank over geekiness. Frank is jazz musician, who really has a passion for music, so much so that sometimes he literally talks in chords, I love this about him. I love that he has a passion and I love his obsession (especially since its with something I know little about). However, I made the arguement that this obsession is geeky, and here is where the trouble began. Perhaps it is my own fault for dating someone who believes himself to be outside the geek community, maybe I should just settle down with a nice geek and we can role play over AIM (could have interesting implications in the bedroom too...). But I happen to love this guy, so what can one do. Apparently he finds the term "geek" highly offensive, which I kind of find offensive. I guess because for me I was saying, hey you're a geek like me, isn't that cool, and he thought I was giving him shit (what because he doesn't play lead guitar in a rock band?). It was like I was attacking his manliness, he felt that a music obsession is above such geeky activities as (to use the example he used) "Star Wars trivia." Nevermind that I am a Trekkie (don't even get me started on the Trekker v Trekkie argument), I still took offense. It could be rectangles and trapezoids, all are quadralaterals, one shape is not above another. LARPing is more geeky than rock collecting, but both are geeky activities. Its okay, I am a geek, I can say that proudly in a crowd of people. If he finds geek offensive, how can he condescend to date me, someone who's interests are below his? He told me to respect his wishes and not call him a geek in the future (add this on to the list of things I cannot call him. cute, dorky and now geeky, but nerdy is okay). Its kind of a strange thing to fight about, and he's accused me of projecting (which I guess means he doesn't have to apologize?), but damn, are my feelings ever hurt.
